Broken Pencil is an indie arts magazine that has been published in Toronto since 1995. Over the years the look of the magazine has developed from the scotch tape and typewriter aesthetic of 90s zine culture, to its current form that embraces digital media, but still retains a cut and paste feel.
The magazine was redesigned in 2016 with a new look and complete layout redesign, the goal of which was to better bridge the functionality of a product that is both print and digital. This includes covers designed for online sales, rather than newsstands, greater focus on imagery, and bolder headlines for reading on different devices. Coordination with an ever growing e-newsletter will also be leveraged to increase sales, and to provide bonus digital content.
